Exhibition view of Gravity Is a Froce to be Reckoned With Dec. 12, 2009 - Oct. 31, 2010 MASS MoCA
Gravity is a Force to be Reckoned With is based upon Mies van der Rohe's uncompleted project, The 50x50 House (1951). In it a square structure open to view on all four sides through glass walls. The house will be constructed at approximately half scale and inverted, the ceiling of the original becoming the sculpture's floor, the floor becoming the ceiling, and all interior elements such as Mies-designed furniture and partition walls installed upside down. Gravity will seem held at bay. Also on view will be Manglano-Ovalle's Always After (2006), a film that serves as a prelude to the sculptural installation.
An exhibition of new sculptural work by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle opens at Max Protetch Gallery on Friday, February 5. Turning the upside down 50x50 House into an aquarium, Manglano-Ovalle builds on the theme established in the MASS MoCA exhibition.
